On March 13, Alex Ambrose, program director of assessment and analytics at Notre Dame Learning’s Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence, and Kevin Abbott, an academic tech specialist on the Office of Information Technology’s Teaching & Learning Technologies team, led a virtual workshop titled “Crafting Rubrics with Canvas & ChatGPT to Streamline Grading.”

Participants in the workshop engaged in a comprehensive exploration of rubric creation and technology integration focused on the following topics:

1. Understanding Rubric Types

Attendees explored two main types of rubrics, analytic and holistic, gaining insights into their application and benefits. The session highlighted how choosing the right type can enhance assessment clarity and provide detailed feedback, tailoring the approach to specific assignment needs.

2. Drafting Rubrics with ChatGPT Assistance

Participants were guided through drafting their own rubrics, with a special emphasis on leveraging ChatGPT. They focused on identifying criteria, setting performance levels, and articulating descriptors for mastery. This hands-on activity allowed educators to create tailored rubrics for their courses, harnessing ChatGPT’s capabilities for nuanced and effective rubric development.

3. Canvas Integration Techniques

The workshop also covered integrating these rubrics into the Canvas Learning Management System. Educators learned how to use Canvas Rubrics and Speedgrader tools to improve grading efficiency and provide meaningful feedback, streamlining the assessment process.

The session provided a platform for educators to share ideas and engage in discussions about the transformative impact of rubrics in education. If you missed this opportunity, keep an eye out for future workshops and resources to elevate your teaching and assessment methods.
