Faculty are eligible to be selected as fellows if they have received one or more of the following University or College teaching awards; Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C. Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (formerly Kaneb Teaching Award), Thomas P. Madden Award (First Year Courses), Frank O’Malley Award for Undergraduate Teaching, James A. Burns, C.S.C., Graduate School Award, Sheedy Teaching Award (Arts & Letters), James Dincolo Outstanding Undergraduate Professor Award or Joe and Gina Prochaska Family Teaching Award (Business), College of Engineering Outstanding Teacher Award, and Shilts/Leonard Award (Science).
Current Faculty Fellows
Andrew Bartolini is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Dean’s Office of the College of Engineering and is the Director of the First-Year Engineering Program. Bartolini began teaching in the First-Year Engineering Program in 2018 as he finished his graduate studies. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2019 (Ph.D. in Civil Engineering) and 2013 (B.S. in Civil Engineering). Bartolini leads a two-course sequence of engineering courses for approximately 550 first-year students. The sequence is team-taught with a diverse set of instructors representing each engineering department. He also oversees a team of nearly 20 undergraduate student assistants that support the two courses.
The fall-semester course features hands-on projects with both individual and group projects that utilize the Engineering Innovation Hub, a state-of-the-art makerspace. A significant portion of the fall semester is also dedicated to exposing students to the various engineering disciplines through overviews, hands-on experiences, and opportunities to engage with students, alumni and faculty members. This process is designed so first-year engineering students are able to make an informed discipline selection. The spring-semester course teaches the basics of computer programming and is designed as a flipped classroom with many active learning components.
Bartolini also conducts engineering education research related to first-year engineering programs. He studies methods to boost students toward academic success, assists students in making an informed program of study decision, and engages students in hands-on learning environments through the inclusion of makerspaces in the curriculum.
He is also an active member of the First-Year Programs Division of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) and serves as an Executive Director of its board. He is also a member of the Steering Committee for the First-Year Engineering Experience Conference through ASEE.
Outside of the First-Year Engineering Program, Bartolini is the faculty advisor for the Notre Dame Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). As advisor of the ASCE student chapter, Bartolini enjoys supporting the students in developing their leadership and engineering skills. His favorite part of the club is the annual conference which allows students to travel and compete in a variety of civil engineering competitions against other regional colleges and universities.
He received the Thomas P. Madden Award for excellence in teaching first year students (2023) and was named the CCC Advisor of the Year for his work with the ASCE Student Chapter (2023).

Anne García-Romero is an Associate Professor in the Department of Film, Television and Theatre. Her book, The Fornes Frame: Contemporary Latina Playwrights and the Legacy of Maria Irene Fornes (University of Arizona, 2016), explores the work of six award-winning Latina playwrights. Her plays have been developed and produced most notably at the Public Theatre, the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, The Goodman Theatre, The Mark Taper Forum, and Hartford Stage. She holds an MFA in Playwriting from the Yale School of Drama and a Ph.D. in Theatre Studies from University of California, Santa Barbara. She is an alumna of Chicago Dramatists, the Goodman Theatre Playwrights Unit and New Dramatists. She is also a founding member of the Latinx Theatre Commons, where she coordinates the Fornés Institute.
At Notre Dame, she began as a Moreau Postdoctoral Fellow in 2010 and subsequently joined the faculty in 2012. She teaches courses in playwriting, screenwriting and theatre studies. She guides her students to create new work for the stage and screen, as well as trains them in methodologies to analyze contemporary, culturally inclusive theatre. She especially enjoys advising her students’ senior thesis projects as they write and present full-length plays. In 2023, she received a Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C. Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

Dr. Brian Mulholland is an Assistant Professor of the Practice in the Mathematics Department and the Director of the ASCEND program, which is the summer online program for the incoming first years. He received his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame, but before that was an Assistant Rector in Duncan Hall. This experience gave him an opportunity to see the Notre Dame undergraduate population for the diverse community that it is and how his teaching needed to reach all members of the Notre Dame family and beyond.
He works primarily in digital resource development and mathematical pedagogy. He frequently implements alternative teaching practices such as Inquiry Based Learning and Proficiency Based Grading. He plans to further research the impact of these non-traditional teaching methodologies to enhance student learning and promote student success regardless of background.
As a mission hire with the deNicola Center for Ethics and Culture, Brian Mulholland works to support the Catholic mission of the University through his research and teaching. He hopes his research in pedagogy can be used to address injustice in the classroom and create an environment where all students can thrive. Before teaching any class, he reflects on the words of Blessed Basil Moreau, “the mind will not be cultivated at the expense of the heart.” Because of this, besides his math classes, Brian teaches a section of the Moreau First Year Experience course.
He recently received the Frank O’Malley Undergraduate Teaching Award and is honored to teach a wide variety of students. In the Fall of 2023, he is teaching Calculus III which contains mostly STEM students, but is also teaching Elements of Calculus which is mostly business students. If you are in his class or just would like to chat, he would love to talk to you in Hayes-Healy. Always feel free to send him an email and find time for a coffee and chat!

Bahram Moasser is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. He has been involved in teaching undergraduate chemistry labs and lectures at Notre Dame since 2016. He began his academic career at Georgetown University as a teacher and research mentor to graduate and undergraduate students. Before that, he spent many years at the General Electric Global Research Center. He received an A.B. from Cornell University (1978), an M.S. from the University of Wisconsin (1990), and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota (1995).
Along with science, Professor Moasser loves music, poetry, literature, and philosophy and integrates these to the extent possible into his chemistry labs and lectures. In collaboration with a colleague in the Department of Art, Art History, and Design, he has developed an Integration Way of Knowing course for the spring 2024 semester that combines chemistry and art. In addition to chemistry teaching, he was a Moreau instructor for five years and has been a member of the Chemistry Undergraduate Studies Committee for several years. Professor Moasser has received the Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C, Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (2023).
