Join the Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence and faculty colleagues to develop or revise an upcoming course using effective pedagogical principles. Together, we will incorporate your unique situational factors and learning goals, plan effective assessment strategies, structure meaningful class sessions, and draft the syllabus.
Each session will take place on Zoom from 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m., with opportunities for individual feedback in the afternoon. You are welcome to attend the full series or pick the individual sessions that most interest you.

Monday, July 13: Situational Factors and Learning Goals
Two of the key components of effective course design are clearly understanding your context and your goals. In this session, we will discuss different situational factors that can impact your course, ranging from classroom setup to students’ prior knowledge. We will also help you articulate clear learning goals for your course, which will form the basis of all of your subsequent course design choices.

Tuesday, July 14: Assessment
Learning occurs when people are provided with practice and feedback. In this session, we will help participants create assessments that provide students with opportunities to practice the skills that demonstrate attainment of the course learning goals and provide faculty with opportunities to provide meaningful feedback and evaluation of student learning.

Wednesday, July 15: Structuring an Engaging Class Session
Learning is effective when students are actively engaged in processing and applying new information. In this session, we will help participants design class sessions that integrate instruction with purposeful interaction. We will explore strategies for structuring sessions and creating activities that promote meaningful engagement.

Thursday, July 16: Putting It All Together in the Syllabus
A course syllabus is more than a list of policies, assignment due dates, and readings. In this session, we will discuss ways to design an informative, accessible, and inclusive syllabus. We will explore strategies to structure the document, transparently communicate expectations, and engage students with the syllabus beyond the first day of class.
