Melissa Scheve

Melissa Scheve is the program director for teaching and learning initiatives in Notre Dame Learning’s Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence and in the Institute for Educational Initiatives, where she is also an assistant teaching professor in the Education, Schooling, and Society program. At the Kaneb Center, Melissa works closely with instructors through consultations, workshops, and yearlong programming to support their teaching. As a first-generation college graduate, she is particularly interested in helping instructors to develop inclusive learning spaces for all students to thrive.

Melissa’s academic background is in English and teacher education. Prior to joining the University of Notre Dame, she held positions at Yale University and Stanford University. At Yale, she worked as a senior associate director at the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning to support instructors across the university in their teaching. She was also a lecturer in Yale’s Education Studies Program, designing and facilitating a course for undergraduates interested in pursuing teaching careers.

Her time at Stanford included directing the Hollyhock Fellowship, a nationwide program for early-career teachers striving to improve the quality of their teaching and contribute to a reduction in teacher turnover in schools serving vulnerable student populations. She taught graduate courses in secondary English curriculum and instruction in the Stanford Teacher Education Program.

Before her time at Stanford and Yale, Melissa taught high school English for 15 years in Catholic, public, and charter schools; served as department chair; led professional development; and was recognized for various teaching awards.
