Lab for AI in Teaching and Learning (LAITL)

Higher education is no stranger to disruptive technologies; it wasn’t too long ago that we were reckoning with the impact of cell phones, laptops, and calculators on student learning.

Now, the widespread availability of generative AI presents new challenges—but with it also comes the opportunity to think deeply about what it means to educate students who will be living in a world filled with AI tools.

Notre Dame Learning’s Lab for AI in Teaching and Learning (LAITL), located in the University’s AI Collaborative, was established in 2025 to help instructors do just that.

Specifically, LAITL aims to:

  • Advance AI literacy in education. Equip and empower faculty and students with AI fluency by providing workshops, toolkits, training, and resources to support the thoughtful integration of AI into teaching and learning. These include an AI student partners program, a repository of examples of AI in teaching at Notre Dame, and the Notre Dame Teaching Well with AI Academy.
  • Explore AI-driven teaching and learning innovation. Support R&D with emerging AI technologies, pedagogies, and best practices for AI-enhanced learning, teaching, and assessment.
  • Foster AI collaboration across campus and institutions. Build a collaborative AI co-lab network by connecting faculty, academic units, and IT leaders at Notre Dame while establishing cross-institutional partnerships.

Under the direction of G. Alex Ambrose from Notre Dame Learning’s Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence, LAITL convenes faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, and undergraduate research assistants to advance these goals.
