AI seems to be everywhere—in the news you read, in the job postings you check, in the conversations you’re a part of while grabbing lunch at South Dining Hall. So what is AI all about, and what do you need to know to navigate generative AI tools like Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and Dall-E responsibly and effectively here at Notre Dame?
AI for the Notre Dame Community is an on-demand, non-credit course for Notre Dame students looking to learn a bit more about AI, and to grow in their knowledge and confidence regarding these powerful technologies.
Consistent with Notre Dame’s Generative AI Policy for Students and instructors’ ability to set AI policies for their own courses and assignments, this course seeks to help students understand the distinction between using AI to support academic work and relying on it to complete academic work, not least by clarifying the pedagogical and disciplinary reasons why instructors may set boundaries around AI use.
Additionally, the course encourages reflection on the ethical and intellectual implications of AI, considering both its limitations and liabilities, as well as its broader social, cultural, and environmental impacts in light of Notre Dame’s mission and values. It invites students to discern for themselves how AI might be used responsibly, including when it may mean choosing not to use it at all.
While AI for the Notre Dame Community is not credit-bearing, the time commitment is roughly equivalent to a one-credit course that can be taken at a student’s own pace. Undergraduates who complete the course, which has been developed at Notre Dame and is delivered via Canvas, will have it added to their Comprehensive Learner Record to share with future employers.
