Public Writing as a Tool for Learning

Public writing assignments can be an effective way to engage students and help them carry their learning beyond the classroom walls. However, such assignments are also challenging to design, implement, and evaluate. This workshop will draw on the scholarship of teaching and learning, as well as the wisdom and sample assignments of Notre Dame instructors across disciplines, to outline the risks and rewards of incorporating public writing into college courses and introduce best practices for teaching and assessing such writing. Participants will leave the workshop with the beginnings of their own public writing assignment.
