John Behrens

John Behrens is Professor of the Practice of Digital Learning and Director of Notre Dame Learning’s Office of Learning Analytics, as well as Director, Idzik Computing & Digital Technologies Program and Director, College Technology Initiatives in the College of Arts & Letters.

John’s work has focused on improved learning outcomes and access for students around the world by developing innovative software that integrates advances in data science, learning science, and computing science. John was most recently at Pearson where he established data science R&D labs, oversaw product analytics, and led development and deployment of innovative learning products as Vice President of AI Product Development. Prior to Pearson, John led e-learning curriculum and learning system development in Cisco’s flagship CSR program providing assessment and instructional support to 10,000 schools in 165 countries. Before working in industry, John was an Associate Professor of Psychology in Education at Arizona State University’s program in Measurement, Statistics and Methodological Studies. He has more than 50 publications in areas of digital assessment, instructional and assessment personalization, the application of data science to learning ecosystems, and the foundations of data science. He is currently an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions in Learning Technologies.

John received his PhD in Psychology in Education: Measurement, Statistics & Methodological Studies and Master’s degree in Special Education at Arizona State University. He earned his BA in Psychology and Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame.

John has lived in Mishawaka for 20 years with his wife and four children. His interests include gardening, hiking, camping, canoeing, and photography.
