Production Process: Writing vs. Media

Writing

  1. Prewriting

    • Brainstorm
    • Decide on a topic and identify the audience
    • Do research
  2. Drafting

    • Include the purpose, thesis, or argument
    • Does not have to be perfect
    • Others review and make suggestions
  3. Revising

    • Rearrange, replace, remove, add
  4. Proofreading / Editing

    • Mechanics (grammar, spelling, usage, capitalization, punctuation)
    • Sources
  5. Publishing

Media (video, audio, photo)

  1. Pre-Production

    • Brainstorm
    • Write a script
    • Develop a storyboard and/or shot list
    • Scout locations (lighting, noise, outlets, etc.)
    • Line up talent (interviewee, voice artist, model, etc.)
    • Line up equipment (mic, tripod, props, etc.)
  2. Production

    • Set up (lights, microphone, tripod, etc.)
    • Record required media – video, audio, photos
    • Capture B-roll
  3. Post-Production

    • Transfer raw media to computer
    • Trim/crop and arrange media
    • Add transitions, titles, effects, graphics
    • Mix tracks, layers
    • Export/compress
    • Publish the finished product
