Notre Dame uses the Canvas learning management system (LMS) as its online platform for instructors to provide learning materials and activities that supplement face-to-face, blended, or fully online academic courses. Additional learning tools can be added to Canvas to extend the core functionality and features of the system. These include Panopto, Gradescope, Perusall, Turnitin, Vocareum, and many publisher supplement sites.

Students and other course participants may use Canvas to access class material, submit assignments, take quizzes, view grades, and interact with classmates and instructors through online discussions and direct messaging.

Canvas is supported by Notre Dame’s Office of Information Technology at the enterprise level.

Canvas ExpaND

Canvas ExpaND is a separate instance of the Canvas LMS built through Canvas Catalog that serves as an online platform for non-credit-bearing programs (e.g., public-facing courses) offered at Notre Dame.

In these use cases, an instance of Canvas ExpaND, separated from Notre Dame’s standard Canvas environment and other internal IT systems, can be utilized, but please note this requires cost-sharing based on user head counts and ongoing OIT support.
