Jaziel Torres

Jaziel (Jaz) Torres is a graduate associate at Notre Dame Learning’s Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence and a fifth-year Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Notre Dame. Originally from Puerto Rico, he completed his B.S. and M.S. in mathematics at the University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras.
Jaziel’s research focuses on algebraic geometry, which is the study of geometric shapes defined by polynomial equations. For him, as for every algebraic geometer, terms like variety, sheaf, scheme, stalk, germ, and blow-up carry entirely unique mathematical meanings. He has led tutorials and taught courses both at Notre Dame and at Holy Cross College. His pedagogical interests focus primarily on proactive student mentorship, accessible mathematical visualization, and inclusive classroom environments. Approaching his role as a “student coach,” Jaziel emphasizes personal connection, approachable support, and contagious enthusiasm to help students build confidence and achieve conceptual mastery.
