Concept mapping / mind mapping

A concept map or "mind map" is a diagram showing the relationships among concepts. It is a graphical tool for representing knowledge. Concepts are usually enclosed in circles or boxes; relationships between them are indicated by a connecting line. The relationships may be hierarchical or not. Computer programs and websites are available to facilitate creating concept maps.

Use in teaching & learning

Concept maps can help make a complex idea easier to understand. Instructors can build one in real time as they lecture on a new topic. Students can use them during group brainstorming. Concept maps can also help refine creative thinking.
